Using Amazon Pharmacy with Medicare Part D

Amazon Pharmacy is not available as a pharmacy selection in HeyMOE, so HeyMOE cannot calculate Amazon-specific prescription prices. You can still compare plans in HeyMOE, then verify Amazon Pharmacy directly before choosing a plan or transferring a prescription.

The short answer: Amazon Pharmacy works with some Medicare Part D plans, including plans offered by major insurers, but it is not accepted by every plan. Even when it is in network, it may have preferred or standard cost sharing. The answer depends on your exact plan, plan year, location, medication, and supply amount.

Is Amazon Pharmacy covered by Part D?

It can be. Amazon says it accepts most insurance plans, and current Medicare plan materials show Amazon Pharmacy or PillPack by Amazon Pharmacy in some Part D pharmacy networks. However, that does not mean every plan from the same insurance company includes Amazon.

There are three possible results for a specific plan:

  • Preferred in network: The plan may offer lower copays or coinsurance.
  • Standard in network: The plan covers eligible prescriptions there, but your cost may be higher than at a preferred pharmacy.
  • Out of network: The plan may not cover the prescription except in limited circumstances, and you may have to pay the full price.

Do not rely on the insurance company name alone: Pharmacy networks can differ among plans from the same carrier and can change from one year to the next. Confirm the complete plan name and contract or plan ID for the year you are comparing.

How to compare plans in HeyMOE

  1. Enter every prescription accurately. Include the drug name, strength, quantity, refill frequency, and whether you use a 30-day or extended supply.
  2. Select pharmacies that HeyMOE can price. Choose two or three convenient local or mail-order options shown in HeyMOE.
  3. Compare total annual cost. Review premiums plus estimated prescription costs, not only the monthly premium or one copay.
  4. Review coverage rules. Check the formulary tier, deductible, prior authorization, step therapy, quantity limits, and allowed supply amount.
  5. Create a short list. Once you have two or three strong plan choices, verify Amazon Pharmacy separately for each one.

HeyMOE tip: Prices from a different pharmacy are useful for comparing plans, but they are not an estimate of what Amazon will charge. Treat Amazon pricing as a separate verification step.

How to verify Amazon pricing

Check with both the Part D plan and Amazon Pharmacy. Ask about the exact plan year and medication rather than asking only whether the carrier generally works with Amazon.

  1. Call the plan. Use the number listed in the plan documents or on your member card.
  2. Ask for Amazon's network status. Confirm whether Amazon Pharmacy Home Delivery or PillPack by Amazon Pharmacy is preferred, standard, or out of network.
  3. Ask for the medication price. Provide the drug name, strength, quantity, and 30-day or 90-day supply.
  4. Ask about restrictions. Confirm formulary coverage, prior authorization, step therapy, quantity limits, and whether mail order is allowed.
  5. Confirm with Amazon. Add your insurance information to your Amazon Pharmacy profile or call Amazon Pharmacy Customer Care at 855-745-5725.

Suggested question for the plan:

“For [plan name and plan ID] in [plan year], is Amazon Pharmacy Home Delivery or PillPack by Amazon Pharmacy in network for me? Is it preferred or standard? What would I pay for [drug, strength, quantity, and supply amount], and are there any coverage restrictions?”

Amazon can show an estimated insurance price before it has your prescription, but Amazon says the exact copay comes from your insurance plan. Keep a note of the date, representative's name, and answer you receive.

Insurance price or cash price?

Amazon may display more than one price, such as your Part D copay and a price available without using insurance. Compare the amount you would pay today and how each option affects your Medicare drug coverage.

Important: A cash purchase or discount price used instead of your Part D benefit generally does not count automatically toward your Part D deductible or annual out-of-pocket limit and may not appear on your Explanation of Benefits. Ask your plan whether a claim can be submitted and what amount, if any, would count before choosing the cash option.

Amazon Prime prescription savings, RxPass, and manufacturer coupons are separate from Part D insurance. Each program has its own medication and eligibility rules. Do not assume that a displayed discount can be combined with Medicare coverage.

Before transferring prescriptions

  • Confirm that Amazon can dispense the exact medication and supply amount.
  • Confirm the final price after Amazon processes your insurance information.
  • Keep enough medication on hand for the transfer and delivery period.
  • Keep urgent or same-day medications at a local pharmacy when waiting for delivery would be unsafe.
  • Do not cancel an existing refill until the new prescription is accepted and the delivery date is confirmed.

Amazon does not dispense every medication or medical supply. Availability may also differ between Amazon Pharmacy bottles and the PillPack packaging service.
